What Size System Does Your Home Need?
Your home’s heating and cooling needs depend on more than its square footage. Insulation, windows, ceiling height, air leakage, local weather, and ductwork all matter.
Air Conditioner Size
AC capacity is commonly expressed in tons. One ton equals 12,000 BTU/h of cooling capacity. SEER2 describes efficiency, not the size of the unit.
Furnace & Boiler Size
Heating capacity is expressed in BTU/h. Input and output ratings are different. AFUE describes annual fuel efficiency and does not replace the rated heating output. Boiler selection also depends on the hydronic or steam system.
Ductless & Home-Specific Sizing
A Manual J load calculation determines heating and cooling loads. Ductless systems need room-by-room loads and a verified indoor/outdoor match. Equipment selection also requires manufacturer performance data and a compatible system design.
Already Have A Professional Load Calculation?
Use the total cooling load from that calculation to understand the units. This conversion does not select a specific AC model or installation size.
