The right HVAC accessory should solve a defined problem and work properly with the system you own. Bomar Heating and Cooling can discuss thermostats, filtration, humidifiers and other comfort products in relation to your equipment and priorities.
Start with what you want improved. Easier scheduling, different temperature control and a filtration concern call for different options. A longer feature list does not automatically make an accessory a better fit.
Thermostats and System Controls
A thermostat must be compatible with the equipment, wiring and operating functions. Some systems need particular controls to support all their features. Ask about compatibility before purchasing a device based on its app or appearance.
Explain how the home is used and which settings are difficult to manage. A programmable or connected control may make scheduling easier, but it cannot repair a failed component or create airflow in a room that lacks it.
Filtration Upgrades
Central filtration options need to fit the cabinet and the HVAC system's airflow requirements. Ask what a proposed product is intended to capture and what maintenance it needs. The most restrictive filter that physically fits is not automatically appropriate.
Persistent dust, odors and moisture should be described separately. Indoor air quality solutions have different purposes, and filtration does not address every source or ventilation concern.
Air Cleaning and UV Products
Ask which specific concern an air-cleaning or UV product is intended to address, what performance information supports that use and how it will be maintained. Installation location and compatibility can affect the result.
Understand the product's limitations and ask about any byproducts. No accessory should be presented as a universal solution for indoor air quality or a substitute for correcting a continuing moisture or pollutant source.
Whole-House Humidifiers
If measured indoor humidity is too low, whole-house humidifiers may be worth discussing. Selection involves the heating system, water supply, controls and service access. Settings must account for condensation and the home's response, not just a fixed target.
Existing moisture problems need their own investigation. Adding humidity is not appropriate simply because the season has changed.
Compare the Full Cost of an Upgrade
- Equipment and installation work.
- Any required wiring, cabinet or connection changes.
- Compatibility with current and planned HVAC equipment.
- Filters, lamps, water panels or other replacement items.
- Cleaning and professional maintenance requirements.
- Control features you will actually use.
Ask how each proposed accessory addresses your stated concern. Separate optional upgrades from repairs needed to restore basic heating or cooling so you can set priorities clearly.
Coordinate Accessories With New Equipment
If furnace replacement or AC installation is planned, discuss accessories during the estimate. Controls, filtration and humidification can then be considered with the equipment layout and installation scope.
For a functioning system, an accessory may still be appropriate, but it should be evaluated for that system rather than selected as a stand-alone purchase.
